On Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waitlist? Learn How to Check Your Section 8 Waitlist Position

Many Housing Authorities across the country have a set of preferences to rank people who applied to participate in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. Admission preferences are based on needs in the local communities.

But not all Housing Authorities have a set of preferences to rank applicants. Some Housing Authorities sort the waiting list by time and date of application only. Because of the fact that your place on the waiting list could be sorted differently at each Housing Authority, and because your wait will depend on factors such as how many people went on the waiting list, and how many people left the program, each month, we recommend that you check the status of your application from time to time to see if you’re making any progress and moving up on the waiting list!

We recommend that you check your Section 8 waitlist application status once every 6 months to a year.

The best way to check if you’re moving up on the waiting list is by calling the Housing Authority with which you submitted your waiting list application, and asking them when the people they are now taking full applications from originally applied for assistance. For example, if the Housing Authority is taking applications from people who applied in August 2013, and you applied in April 2016, you would know that you may still have a long wait for assistance.

Please don’t call and ask the Housing Authority representatives how much longer the wait will be because they cannot estimate this due to so many factors effecting the wait times.

Don’t forget to have your information ready for identity verification purposes when calling your Housing Authority.

If you are on a waiting list and your address and/or telephone number has changed, you must notify your local Housing Authority immediately. It is extremely important to keep your information current with your Housing Authority so that they can get a hold of you should they need to! Failure to report changes may result in removal of your name from the waiting list, so make sure to do it.
