Applied for Section 8? Not Doing This May Result in Your Removal from the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List
Imagine the following scenario: You applied for a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list, waited for many, many months (or even years) for your name to come up, and when it finally does come up and its time for an interview (the one where if you’re approved, you will receive a voucher and will be eligible to look for housing), you will never know about the interview because the Housing Authority with whom you submitted your waiting list application was unable to reach you by mail. Devastating.
What’s even worse is that failure of the Housing Authority to reach you by mail will result in your cancellation from the waiting list.
Unfortunately this happens from time to time and people were DROPPED from the waiting list because of this. The good news is that this is totally preventable and you can take steps to make sure it doesn’t happen to you.
REPORTING THE CHANGE OF ADDRESS TO A HOUSING AUTHORITY
If you move, it is very important that you send the Housing Authority with which you applied for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list your new address, and do it ASAP! Some Housing Authorities will allow you to do this via a Change of Address form on their websites, while with others you will need to send them your new address in writing. Contact your Housing Authority directly for specific instructions on how to report a change of address with them.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that some Housing Authorities require that you report a change of address within 30 days of you moving, while others require that you do it in 10 days (or even less). Point being, make sure to do this ASAP right after you move, to avoid any possibility of your name being removed from the waiting list due to not reporting the change of address on time!
FEW MORE TIPS
Reporting the change of address is not the only thing you have to report to a Housing Authority. Some Housing Authorities require that you report preference status changes, as well as income changes within a certain time frame of a said occurrence. Ask your Housing Authority if and when you should report these changes to avoid any potential issues!
